Charming Baker was born in Hampshire, England in 1964. He started to draw at a very early age while travelling with his family around the world following the career of his father in the British Army. After leaving school at the age of 16 Charming whose real name is Alan took menial jobs for a while but never stopped drawing. Baker enrolled at Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design in 1985 and started to work as a commercial graphic designer after graduation.
Charming Baker work as a designer and an illustrator led to developing his interest in painting. He would go and look at masterpieces in museums. In his own words about Edouard Manet (1832-1883): “there are some of his pictures that I’ve sat and gazed at for hours in my past. I love the way he can shock an audience in what first appears such an innocent-looking image”. However, it was not until 2007 that Baker had his first personal show at Truman Brewery in London followed by The Meaning of Everything in Redchurch Street in London in 2009 and Stupid Has a New Hero in New York Studio Gallery in New York in 2010.
Charming’s real breakthrough came with his Everything Must Go show at Mercer Street Studio in London in 2011 which was a complete sell-out. Baker was invited to take part in London 2012 Britain Creates exhibition at Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 2012 and had another completely sold-out personal exhibition Lie Down I Think I Love You at Milk Studios in Los Angeles in 2013. It was followed by successful solo shows Sweet Nothing at Sotheby’s S2 in London in 2016 and So it Goes… at the Vinyl Factory in Soho, London in 2018. Charming Baker continues to create new paintings, sculptures and prints and his works are present in the most prestigious and largest private collections including Damien Hurst, Alberto Mugrabi, Frank Cohen and others.
